Thursday Workshops

Twice a month, we organise a thematic workshop on a Thursday evening at Salle Dublin. These classes are open to everyone whether you follow the weekly classes or not (NB - check the level requirements for each workshop) and are a great fun way to learn more about different aspects of forró and forró culture!

Each workshop is independent of the others so you can attend as many as you wish. Registration in advance is always appreciated and for some workshops, compulsory. Take a look at each description for more information.

The programme for January-March 2020 will be published by the end of December. In the meantime, you can get an idea of the type of topics offered by checking out the programme for September-December 2019 below.

19th Sept - Forró in the Dark workshop

Learn how dancing without using your eyes grows your sensitivity, your trust and your connection with your partner. Discover new sensations and understanding of what forró is truly about.

There will be a mix of old favourites and new exercises, so If you already joined one of the first blindfold workshops, you're still more than welcome to join.

Location: Salle Dublin, rue de Dublin 13

Time: 20:00-21:30

Cost: 14 euros per person

Registration: highly recommended, email dance@sarahforro.com

Recommended for dancers who are already comfortable with the forró basic steps

3rd Oct - Samba de Gafieira workshop

Samba de gafieira is both classy and playful, and a great opportunity to uncover new parts of Brazilian culture and music. You'll find some similarities with forró, and lots of differences to discover as well!

Often described as more technical than forró, it's also a chance to deepen your leading and following skills and improve your forró - at the same time as learning something new!

Location: Salle Dublin, rue de Dublin 13

Time: 20:00-22:00

Cost: 16 euros per person

Registration: required, email dance@sarahforro.com

Open to: all, no prior experience required

This workshop will cover different content to the samba de gafieira course which took place in May, so it is a good opportunity to revise what you learnt and add to your dance. No prior experience is required, however, so if you didn't participate in May you will still be able to follow this class with no problem.

17th Oct - Role Switching: how, when, why!

As a forró community, we have moved beyond automatically assuming women follow and men lead. This opens up all sorts of new and exciting possibilities during the dance.

This workshop looks at what is possible when we are willing to switch roles, we will learn multiple ways to do so smoothly, and why we choose to switch - or not.

Location: Salle Dublin, rue de Dublin 13

Time: 20:00-22:00

Cost: 16 euros per person

Registration: recommended, email dance@sarahforro.com

Open to dancers who are already comfortable with the forró basic steps (dois pra lá, vai e vem, opening and at least two simple turns).

31st Oct - Introduction to Roots Style

Roots? Is that really a Brazilian word?! :)

In this workshop we'll learn where Roots comes from, and how it is different from the forró you already know. We'll do a lot of practical exercises to train our bodies to feel the differences and learn some typical movements that belong to Roots-style.

Location: Salle Dublin, rue de Dublin 13

Time: 20:00-22:00

Cost: 16 euros per person

Registration: highly recommended, email dance@sarahforro.com

Open to dancers who are already comfortable with the forró basic steps (dois pra lá, vai e vem, opening and at least two simple turns).

14th Nov - Guest Workshop with Sheila Santos

Leading and following are crucial skills for forró as well as all other couple dances. But the vision we have of them can be very limiting. Sheila Santos's research into the topic has pushed the boundaries of how leaders and followers can interact on the dance floor and made her a world-class expert on the topic.

She will be in Brussels to share her expertise with us in an exciting two-hour workshop. This is a one-off opportunity as Sheila is in Brussels for just a few days, so don't miss out.

If you are looking for more nuance in leading and following, you are keen to explore true dialogue in your dance and you would like to develop new techniques to interact with your partner, this workshop is for you!

Location: Salle Dublin, rue de Dublin 13

28th Nov - Dancing in Rodas (a.k.a. Wild West Forró!)

You've all seen a roda: a festive circle where everyone dances with one or more people to celebrate their birthday or another big event.

In this playful workshop, we'll learn how to "steal" a partner in a roda, how to be "stolen" and how to clap the rhythm correctly. As well as being just good fun, it's also great for your spatial awareness, connection and understanding of the dance!
